How to Turn Client Testimonials Into Marketing That Builds Trust
Most small businesses have happy clients. Far fewer turn that goodwill into proof that helps the next person decide. Here's how to ask for better testimonials and where to put them.

How should a small business use client testimonials?
Use client testimonials as specific proof placed where people are deciding: near the top of your homepage, on the matching service page, next to your contact button, and in follow-up emails. The strongest testimonials name the client, describe what changed, and say something about what it was like to work with you.
A good testimonial answers the thing people are wondering when they read your site: has this worked for someone like me?
What makes a testimonial persuasive?
Compare these two:
"Great to work with! Highly recommend."
"Since working with her, our web traffic has grown noticeably, and I can say without hesitation that she has been one of the most valuable resources I've brought on."
Kathryn Currey, Founder and CEO, Friday Personal Assistants
The first one is nice to get. The second one actually helps someone decide, because it has:
- A real name, title, and business.
- A specific change the reader cares about.
- A sense of what working together was like.
How do you ask for a better testimonial?
Most people freeze when you ask, "Would you write me a testimonial?" It's too open. Send three short questions instead:
- What was going on before we worked together?
- What changed?
- What would you tell a friend who was thinking about hiring me?
Then offer to pull a short quote from their answers and send it back for approval. Most clients are relieved not to have to write it from scratch, and you end up with something much more specific. Always get permission to use their name, photo, and business.
Timing matters too. Ask while the results are fresh, ideally right after a client tells you something went well. If you're doing a Q4 look-back, this is a good week to send a few of these.
Where should testimonials go on your website?
| Where | Which testimonial works best |
|---|---|
| Near the top of your homepage | Your strongest, most specific result |
| Each service page | A quote about that specific service |
| Next to contact forms and booking buttons | A quote about what it was like to work with you |
| About page | A quote about trust, communication, or reliability |
| Pricing page | A quote about value for the money |
On my own homepage, each testimonial has a short label saying what it proves, like traffic growth or more patient visits. That way someone skimming still gets the point.
Where else can you reuse testimonials?
- Follow-up emails. Add one relevant quote to the second or third email in your inquiry follow-up sequence.
- Google reviews. Ask happy clients to leave a review on your Google Business Profile as well.
- Social posts. Pair a quote with a short story about the problem behind it.
- Proposals. Include one or two quotes from clients who were in a similar situation.
Do testimonials help with SEO and AI search?
They can. Clients describe your work in their own words, and those are often the same words other people type into a search bar. When testimonials are published as real text on your pages, not only as images, search engines and AI tools can read them. Named, first-hand accounts of working with you are also the kind of experience and trust signals Google's guidelines talk about.
In the MESSAGE Method, testimonials support the Story step by showing the before and after, and the Assets step by making your pages more convincing. If you want to see how I handle proof on my own site, read what realistic results look like in the first 90 days.
And if your proof is scattered across emails and texts, I can help you pull it together and decide where it belongs.
Frequently asked questions
How many testimonials does a small business website need?
Fewer than you'd think. Three to six strong, specific testimonials in the right places do more than a long page of short quotes.
Can I edit a client's testimonial?
You can trim it for length or clarity, but send the final version back to the client for approval and don't change the meaning.
Should testimonials use full names?
Full names, titles, and business names are more believable. For sensitive services like therapy or health care, ask clients what they're comfortable sharing and respect that.
What is the difference between a testimonial and a review?
A review is something a client posts on a platform like Google. A testimonial is a quote you collect and publish on your own site with their permission. Most businesses benefit from both.
